...so when will you be booking?

MODERN CLASSIC IN SUFFOLK

Given the choice, most of us would pick a period holiday home, but does that always have to mean thatch and flagstones? No. Some far-sighted companies are busy preserving more recent classics - buildings such as the 1928 House, in Aldeburgh. With just two careful owners - a father and daughter - since it was built, this red-brick working man's cottage had nearly all its fittings and furnishings intact, if battered.

Now they've been painstakingly restored to their 1920s glory, so the house has its original kitchen range, armchairs, art-deco radio, fireplaces and gloriously retro bathtub. (All right, they've sneaked in central heating, a modern cooker, a television and an iPod dock but it's subtly done.) It's a treasure, and the perfect base for a thoroughly trad holiday, swimming from the long beach, scoffing fish and chips, and messing about in boats on the River Alde.

Sleeping four, it's yours for £385/£735 through Best of Suffolk 01728 638962, www.bestofsuffolk.co.uk
