Mersea Island.....a mystical hidden gem on the Essex coast!

Think you have seen all the best coastal places to stay in the UK?  We have got one you might just have missed...

Mersea Island is a truly beautiful place which can only be reached by a Roman causeway connecting the island to Colchester, known as the Strood. Make sure you check the tide times though, as everyday the road floods at High Tide and for a period the island is completely cut off from the mainland.

Once on the island you will be welcomed by some of the best seafood restaurants around serving locally sourced fish, crabs, lobsters, prawns and of course the famous oysters. Head to the renowned The Company Shed, described by Jay Rayner of The Observer as 'a gem', it's fabulous seafood platters will not fail to delight.

If you like your food and drink then you may want to stop by the Mersea Island vineyard or book yourself on a cookery course at the school.

Sailing and watersports is also a big thing on Mersea Island...home to Olympic sailing medallist Saskia Clark. The annual island regatta takes place in August with sailing races, watersports and on-shore entertainment in the form of stalls, music and fireworks. If you have left your sea legs at home but find yourself in search of adventure then try the Mersea Centre, part of Essex outdoors where you can try activities like High Ropes, Orienteering, Off road biking and obstacle courses with the family.

The natural beauty of Mersea Island is such that you don't even need to plan lots of things to do. Enjoy a tranquil wander taking in the stunning beaches, the saltmarshes, grasslands and Cudmore Grove to the East of the island with views over the Colne and Blackwater estuaries, walk the seawall and see the eroding cliff tops. Wildlife is in abundance around these parts and birdwatchers will love spotting the geese, wigeons and buntings as well as other animals including deer. See the Mersea Wildlife blog for more details.

Mersea Island is definitely off the beaten track and offers a wonderful tranquil escape. All you need now is the perfect place to stay.......Bumpkin is a stunning, charming holiday cottage in West Mersea which sleeps 6 guests. The holiday cottage has a contemporary and stylish interior with a light and airy living space enjoying ample soft seating, WiFi, flatscreen TVs with Freeview and a beautiful outside decked area. Bumpkin is ideally located close to the boutique shops and restaurants on the island and has off road parking.

So try somewhere different and book a break at Bumpkin on Mersea Island - there is still time to book a last minute break and catch the Christmas Lights Switch On event on 7 December 2012. Christmas & New Year breaks are still available to book...

Why choose a Norfolk holiday?

Welcome to Norfolk!

We are really lucky to have some amazing cottages in Norfolk for you to stay in and to benefit from everything this beautiful county has to offer.

Whether you are looking for a coastal retreat, exploring the countryside or just a bit of retail therapy you will find everything in easy reach.

Norfolk on the Coast

From our Flagstaff properties you are able to easily explore the diversity of the entire North Norfolk coast with ease.  On your doorstep is the unspoilt beach at Burnham Overy Staithe. At low tide, the creek is the perfect place for swimming with all the family and crabbing at high tide on the quay. Scolt head island is accessible by foot at low tide or why not take the island ferry at High tide and watch the sailing boats...you might even spot a seal! The Boathouse on the quay sells all of your beach supplies as well as drinks and sandwiches. The Hero bar and restaurant serves fresh local food, perfect after a long day on the beach! A couple of miles further up the coast and you meet the  Holkham Estate with its famous beach as seen on ITV's Kingdom and Shakespeare in Love.

The Holkham Estate has more than just a beach to offer, in fact it could keep you entertained for days.  There are spectacular grounds inhabited by deer, the Victoria pub serving scrummy local food, an Adnams shop, homemade ice cream parlour and fishing.

Also don't miss...Wells-next-the-Sea for a traditional seaside experience complete with amusement arcades, fish and chips and a miniature train from the town to the beach.  Wells also boasts some fantastic independent shops; why not grab a bag of sweets from Goldings or some charcuterie from the Norfolk Deli Company. Wells is home to some great places to eat and drink, The Crab House near the quay is a great place to eat fresh fish caught from their own boat and for one of the best pints with the best views climb up onboard Albatross, Wells' famous Dutch Barge.

Burnham Market aka 'Chelsea on Sea' is a hot spot for the finer things on the coast and some serious celebrity spotting.  Think
Jack Wills, Grooms Artisan Bakery and the ultimate posh pub - The Hoste!

Don't forget to say hello to the seals either, with tours running daily in high season from the beautiful Blakeney and Morston.

Norfolk in the Countryside

Whether you choose Romulus and Remus or Crossways Barn you are never far away from a brilliant day out!

Thetford Forest is the perfect place for an adventure, go cycling, drive a Segway, and if you are really brave try the high wire experience Go Ape!  Time your holiday right and you could also go and watch The Red Rose Chain 'Theatre in the Forest'.

If you fancy something a bit more relaxing then visit the Pensthorpe Nature Reserve near Fakenham for lovely country walks, gardens and wildlife.

For days out with the children (or big kids...) you have to pay a visit to the Dinosaur Adventure Park, Bewilderwood, Banham Zoo or Pleasurewood Hills theme park.

An hour East and you will find the Norfolk Broads, with watersports and boating aplenty.

Visit Norwich, 'the most complete medieval city in Britain' for some satisfying retail therapy.  There is Chapelfields and Castle Mall for all the top High Street brands or 'tomblands' for the more boutique shopper.  Stay into the evening to enjoy the foodie scene and great nightlife, it was once said that there was a pub for every day of the year in Norwich.

If this has whet your appetite, the first step is to choose your cottage.......

For help choosing the perfect Norfolk holiday feel free to get in touch with our friendly bookings team on 01728 638962 or email bookings@bestofsuffolk.co.uk
